Tourism is a huge industry across the whole of this country. This amazing city is no exception. Alicante boasts fantastic attractions, things to do and glorious weather all year round. It’s also part of the super popular Costa Blanca which is one of the top Spanish Costas.

Upon exiting the airport towards the city centre there is a picturesque Marina. This marina is overlooked by the impressive Mount Benacantil. Alicante is one of the most interesting cities in Spain. Brimming with history, culture and historical architecture.

Santa Barbara Castle

Santa Barbara Castle is a fortification that sits on top of Mount Benacantil. This mountain lies in the centre of Alicante. According to Wikipedia, the castle’s origins date back to the 9th Century. This is when the Iberian Peninsula was under Muslim rule.

The castle itself appears to have got it’s name in 1248 on St Barbara’s day. Alphonse de Castille led his forces into battle to retake the castle.

Known as the “Castle in the Sky” this was a formidable fortification to opposing forces. The castle still boasts dungeons, cannons, a moat and an imposing lookout tower.

The Castle is free to visit if you choose to walk. There is also the option of taking the lift for a small fee.

Archaeological Museum Of Alicante

Established in 1932, the Archaeological Museum is an interesting place to visit here. This museum was once an old hospital. It stands today as one of the most modern museums of it’s kind.

There are several themes to this museum that depict ancient Alicante. Taking you on a historical journey from ancient times to the modern day city it is today.

This modern museum received the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) in 2004. Earning international recognition for intelligence and originality. It’s now considered one of the best museums in Spain.

Carmen del Campillo Tea House

Carmen del Campillo Tea House is an Arabian style paradise located outside the city. Here you can enjoy amazing tea and Arab pastries while taking in the beautiful scenery.

This is not an easy place to find so you need to head out of Alicante and head towards Crevillente. The Carmen del Campillo Tea House lies off the N340 between Crevillente and Albatera.

Upon arrival at this hidden treasure, you get a glimpse of a large Moorish house. Once entering the wrought iron gate you arrive inside the well kept gardens. This is no ordinary Tea House, in fact, the owners consider this to be a place of spirituality and relaxation.

Canelobre Caves, Busot

Another of the leading things to do in Alicante is paying a visit to the beautiful Canelobre Caves. These ancient caves lie in the small town of Busot, around a 30 minute drive inland.

Formed several million years ago, Canelobre Caves are forever changing for the most part. The caves are believed to be the longest and deepest in Spain. The cathedral shaped vault is the top attraction here (as shown above). Canelobre Caves use hi-tech lighting to amplify their beauty. Concerts are also held here which treats you to amazing acoustic sounds.

The Cabezón de Oro (golden head) mountain is where the entrance to the cave lie. Some 700 metres above Sea level. The lower cave system opens up into a spectacular underground cavern. This is a must visit attraction when you next visit this city.
