The weather in Gran Canaria is one of the more interesting of the Canary Islands as the average temperature does not fluctuate too much. Whatever time of year you visit Gran Canaria, you are certain of sun and warm temperatures.

Weather in Gran Canaria, Average Temperatures & Forecast

Gran Canaria is located in the centre of the Canary Islands with Tenerife to the west and Fuerteventura to the east. The population of Gran Canaria is not quite as big as Tenerife with some 850,000 inhabitants. close to 400,000 or 45% of all inhabitants live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the joint capital City of Gran Canaria.

The winter average temperature is as high as 18 Celsius and does not tend to drop much lower. The average temperature during the warmer summer months is 24 Celsius but can rise significantly higher. This is especially true for July, August and September when the temperature will often exceed 30 Celsius.

The Weather in Gran Canria in the Autumn months of September, October and November is still pretty warm but the temperature will begin to drop towards the end of September. After the summer months with no rainfall, the autumn months will bring some badly needed rain but not a significant amount.

September is the first of the autumn months but the temperature is almost as hot as August. The average temperature during September is 24 Celsius, the sea temperature is now a warm 23 Celsius. September sees a few days of rainfall after three barren months without rain but the precipitation is minimal. The hours of sunshine each day will drop to 8 hours but many of those will still exceed 30 Celsius.

October sees a small drop in the average temperature but not a significant decrease. The average temperature in Gran Canaria in October is 23 Celsius but there is more rainfall than Septemeber. Normally there will be two or three days rain in October but the precipitation will probably be at least double that of September. The hours of sunshine drops to 7 hours but the sea temperature will remain at 23 Celsius. The Gran Canaria weather in October is excellent in comparison to some of the other Canary Islands. Although the average is around 23 Celsius, there will still be days that exceed 30 Celsius.

November is the end of autumn leading into winter when the temperature will again decrease. The average temperature in November is 21 Celsius but only December will see more rainfall. The historical precipitation for November is about a third more than October and it normally rains for around four days. The hours of sunshine remain at 6 hours and the sea temperature will decrease to 22 Celsius. Although the average temperature has dropped for this month, November has still recorded high temperatures recently.

The winter weather in Gran Canaria during the colder months of December, January and February sees the temperature gradually decreasing. These months see more rainfall than any other month but the rain is minimal compared to the mainland. The average temperature during the day is normally around 18 Celsius but this will drop further in the evenings.

December sees more rainfall than any other month in Gran Canaria and the hours of sunshine will drop to 6 hours. It will probably rain for at least five days during this month and the precipitation will be significantly more than any other month also. The average temperature during the day is 19 Celsius but many of these days will exceed 20 Celsius and possibly rise to the mid twenties. The evenings will now start to feel much cooler and the sea temperature will drop to 21 Celsius. December is another popular month for tourism so expect plenty of activity and some warm sunny days to enjoy.

January is coldest month in Gran Canaria as it is for most of the Canary Islands and indeed most of Spain generally. The daytime average temperature will decrease to around 18 Celsius but the rainfall will be less than December. The hours of sunshine each day will remain at 6 hours but the sea temperature will drop to 19 Celsius. It’s normal to expect three days worth of rain at least but the precipitation is less than December also. The weather in Gran Canaria in January is still warm in comparison to most destinations, this is possibly the busiest month for tourists looking for some winter sun.

February is almost identical to January in many ways with the same sort of temperature and rainfall. The monthly average temperature in February is marginally higher than the previous month while the rainfall will be only marginally lower. It will probably rain for at least three days in this month and the sea temperature will remain at 19 Celsius. The hours of sunshine each day will be 7 hours as winter reaches it’s conclusion.

Spring Weather In Gran Canaria

The spring weather in Gran Canaria is exceptional, the temperature is now gradually increasing and the rainfall is decreasing. The average temperature during the spring months of March, April and May is over 20 Celsius and most days will remain dry.

March is the beginning of spring when the temperatures are finally increasing again after the winter. Although the average temperature for March is 19 Celsius, towards the end of the month this increases to 20 Celsius. Rainfall is becoming more scarce now so it will probably not rain for more than two days during this month. The average hours of sunshine will remain at 7 hours and the sea temperature will remain at 19 Celsius. The evenings will now begin to feel warmer and the island will be buzzing with tourist activity.

April sees another small increase in the temperature and a decrease in the amount of rainfall. The average daily temperature is now 20 Celsius with many days feeling much warmer. The hours of sunshine halfway through spring will now increase to 8 hours but the sea temperature will remain at 19 Celsius. You will be unfortunate to see any rainfall during April and have the opportunity to enjoy some warm sunny weather.

May is technically the last month of spring but like September, this could easily be confused for a summer month. The weather in Gran Canaria in May is warm with an average temperature of 21 Celsius. It’s said that you can sometimes experience temperatures of 10 Celsius above the monthly average, this is especially true in May. It’s also likely that several days towards the end of the month will exceed 30 Celsius. The hours of sunshine will now increase to 9, there is virtually no rainfall historically and the sea temperature will increase to 20 Celsius.

The summer weather in Gran Canaria can be extremely hot and the rainfall non existent. The summer months of June, July and August with the exception of September are the hottest in Gran Canaria. The average temperature during these months is around 24 Celsius but many days will exceed 30 Celsius. There is hardly any rainfall on record during these months and the sea temperature will be ideal for swimming and water activities.

June is the beginning of the summer in Gran Canaria and the temperature will be increasing sharply. Although the average temperature in June is 22 Celsius, this month can regularly exceed 30 Celsius, especially towards the end of the month. Most days will be hotter than 25 Celsius and the sea temperature will increase to 21 Celsius. On average there are 9 hours of sunshine each day and it’s very unlikely to rain much if at all.

July is one of the hottest months in Gran Canaria but marginally cooler than August and September. The average temperature during this month is 24 Celsius but most days will fell much hotter. The highest temperature ever recorded in Gran Canaria was in July, 44.2 Celsius was recorded at the airport in 1952. The hours of sunshine will now increase to 10 each day and temperatures will frequently exceed 30 Celsius. There is no recorded rainfall in July in recent years so you are unlikely to experience any rain during your visit. The sea temperature will now increase to 22 Celsius which is perfect for any water activities.

August is the hottest month in Gran Canaria as it is for most of Spain generally. Although the average temperature is said to be 24 Celsius, most will be hotter than 30 Celsius and perhaps even hotter. The hours of sunshine will remain at 10 hours a day and the sea temperature will remain at 22 Celsius. August like July has no recent rainfall recorded so you are unlikely to have rain ruin your holiday.
