Hottest Canary Island In Winter & Spring

Welcome to our guide about the hottest Canary Island in the winter and spring months of December, January, February and March. These months are typically the most popular for those wishing to enjoy some sunshine away from the colder climate of northern Europe.
Hottest Canary Island

Which Is The Hottest Canary Island?

The Canary Islands are among the top holiday destinations during the colder months as the temperature rarely drops much below 17 Celsius in winter and spring. Commonly referred to as the “Fortunate Isles” and the “Islands of Eternal Spring” the Canary Islands enjoy a sub-tropical climate with hot summers and warm winters. Sunshine and warm temperatures are assured whenever you decide to visit these beautiful volcanic islands.

There are 7 main islands that form the Canaries in total but the focus of this article is to look at the the hottest Canary Island that attract the most tourism. Typically the warmest all year round would be those located closest to Western Africa such as Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. This is not necessarily the case during the winter and spring months as each island is unique and experiences very different conditions depending on that particular month.

Hottest Canary Island in December

December is generally a great time to visit the Canaries, as the temperature is plummeting further north, most of the islands are still a warm 18-19 Celsius. Christmas is also a special time to enjoy a winter holiday and the fact you can sunbathe and even swim in the sea is alien to most Europeans. Sharing the hottest average temperature of 19 Celsius in December are the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Most heading for winter sunshine probably do not want to see too much rainfall, unfortunately it rains more in December than any other month generally. Gran Canaria sees close to double the rainfall of both Lanzarote and Fuerteventura during December and you are likely to see around 6 or 7 days rain.

Warmest in December – Lanzarote
Fuerteventura does not get as much rain as Lanzarote and there will probably be fewer days of rainfall but there is very little difference. Our marginal preference is for Lanzarote as the Sea temperature is slightly warmer at around 20 Celsius.

Hottest Canary Island in January

January is one of the most popular months for tourism in the Canary Islands with warm temperatures still on offer. January is generally the coldest month but the temperature is unlikely to drop much below 17 Celsius. There is still plenty of rainfall around but a significant decrease from December. The hottest average temperature is 18 Celsius for both Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria whilst Tenerife and Lanzarote both drop to 17 Celsius.

Warmest in January – Gran Canaria
There is very little to choose between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura with the same outside and Sea temperature. There is slightly more rain in Gran Canaria but it’s unlikely to be significantly more. Our marginal preference is for Gran Canaria because the popular resorts of Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés will likely be much busier at the beginning of the year.

Hottest Canary Island in February

The hottest Canary Island in February is another 3-way tie between Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote with an average monthly temperature of 18 Celsius. Tenerife remains at 17 Celsius during this month but is still the place to be during February if you can tolerate the 1 degree difference. The Sea temperature is also very similar across all the islands with an average temperature of 18 Celsius. Tenerife tends to see significantly more rainfall in February than the other islands with Fuerteventura receiving the least rain.

Hottest in February – Fuerteventura
Marginal preference is given to Fuerteventura despite there being little to choose between the other main islands. There is less rainfall in February than anywhere else and this beautiful island is approaching the windy season. Fuerteventura is massively popular for windsurfing and other board activities, the warm air being blown from the Sahara Desert is enough to get our vote.

Hottest Canary Island in March

March is the beginning of spring when the temperature is beginning to increase after the winter months. March in fact is very similar to February in many ways, Tenerife tends to get plenty of rain as the other islands are seeing a significant decrease. The average monthly temperature in Tenerife and Fuertventura is now 18 Celisus with Lanzarote and Gran Canaria warming to 19 Celsius. The Sea temperature is also increasing to 19 Celsius on average with some islands remaining at 18 Celsius.

Hottest Canary Island in March – Gran Canaria
By the slightest of margins the vote goes to Gran Canaria due to the fact that the Sea temperature is slightly warmer than Lanzarote. The levels of rainfall and the outdoor temperature are practically identical between the two, both will certainly be warm whichever you decide to visit.
