In terms of land mass, Lanzarote is smaller than Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura but still attracts millions of visitors. In 2008, Lanzarote recorded over 5 million visitors and continues to attract high levels of tourism each year.
Lanzarote is serviced by Arrecife Airport which is located on the eastern coast of the island. The climate here can be extremely hot and is classified as tropical. During the winter the temperature will not drop much below 17 C and the summers have been known to reach 40 Celsius regularly. There is virtually no rainfall during summer and there has never been any recorded during the month of July. During the winter months you are unlikely to see many more than 3 days of rain in the month.
Like most of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is volcanic in origin. Much of the coastline is rocky but there are also around 10 km of beautiful sandy beaches to enjoy. The top beaches in Lanzarote include, Playa de Papagayo, Playa Francesa and Playa Flamingo. Lanzarote is also home the largest underwater volcanic tunnel in the world, La Cuerva de los Verdes which extends for over 6 km above sea level.

Puerto del Carmen
Puerto del Carmen (Carmen Port) is by far the busiest of all the resorts in Lanzarote. Puerto del Carmen is more established and lies on the east coast of the island to the south of Arrecife airport. The main beach here at Puerto del Carmen is known as the Playa Grande which means big beach in English. The nightlife for this resort is without doubt the best on the island with plenty of bars, restaurants, discos and great entertainment on offer. The old town of Puerto del Carmen is where you will find the beautiful fishing port, the marina and many fine cafes and restaurants. The food and breakfasts available here vary from Canarian, Italian, British and Irish cuisine.
Playa Blanca – White Beach
Playa Blanca has grown from a small fishing village into Lanzarote’s second most popular resort. Playa Blanca is actually the newest resort in Lanzarote which has grown significantly in a little over a decade. Located in the extreme south of the island, Playa Blanca boasts a decent nightlife with plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy yourself. Here you have several beautiful beaches which includes Playa Blanca beach (picture above) and the gorgeous Papagayo just off to the east. Another added advantage of this resort is that it’s only a 20 minute ferry across to the island of Fuerteventura.
