Torrevieja May Fair
Coming soon to the Costa Blanca is the vibrant and colourful Torrevieja May Fair 2015, known in Spanish as the Feria del Mayo and just one of the many popular things to do in Torrevieja. This years events start on Wednesday 6th May with the celebrations continuing until the evening of 10th May. There will be various groups and associations taking part in the fair with many of them providing casetas ( stalls ) selling a lovely array of food and drink. A lot of visitors to the Torrevieja May Fair take the opportunity to wear traditional costumes and flamenco dresses, which is great fun for children and adults alike, so don’t forget your camera.
Las Sevillanas Dancing
The main events take place at the Torrevieja fair ground situated beside the marina. The inauguration of the fair starts at 9pm on Wednesday 6th with music, dance shows and fireworks, a great opportunity to practice your Sevillana dancing. Thursdays events start at 9.30pm and include a mesmerising display of flamenco dance performed by the members of Paya’s dance school. On Friday, also at 9.30pm the dancing continues, this time with performances from the Municipal School of Dance.
Saturday afternoon starts with a traditional church service called Misa Rociera, held in the Inmaculada church. This is followed by a spectacular parade of traditional costumes, horse-drawn carriages and flamboyant horsemen and women meandering their way through the streets to the fairground where the parade continues with up to 30 carriages and 300 riders. The entertainment continues into the evening with more dancing and a singing competition.
At midday on Sunday there are traditional horse shows and in the evening, more song and dance competitions with the final event of the fair being a rendition of the famous “Salve Rociera” by the Jose Hodar and Rociera choirs.
